Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stone scores twice as No. 18 Thoroughbreds force 2-2 tie against RIT

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – With their backs to the wall and an unbeaten streak on the line in the second half, the No. 18 Skidmore College women's soccer team relied on two senior stars to force the equalizer and ultimately battle RIT to an exciting 2-2 tie while playing under the lights on Friday evening.

Receiving a free kick in the 70th minute from a bit outside the penalty box, Kyra Russman-Araya delivered a picture-perfect crosser that found Ella Stone for the game-tying header.

The goal rewarded the Thoroughbreds (8-0-3, 3-0-2 Liberty League) for an aggressive second half of play in which they pressured the Tigers (6-3-4, 2-1-2 Liberty League) at every opportunity, signaling a clear response after falling behind 2-1 at halftime.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Thoroughbreds struck first in the tenth minute of the game on a lasering shot from Stone that shot over the RIT goalie's head and into the net. Sophomore Amanda Shannon was awarded the assist after making the hit-ahead pass.
  • RIT responded with the equalizer in the 20th and followed up by taking the lead in the 36th minute on a pair of terrific shot attempts from Elena Onodera to completely shift the tone of the first half.
  • The Tigers entered halftime holding a 7-to-3 edge in shots and 3-to-0 corner kicks advantage.
  • Skidmore promptly responded in the start of the second half with a more aggressive approach, as the team launched four shots alongside generating a pair of corners before Russman-Arya connected with Stone for the equalizing score.
  • The Thoroughbreds finished the second half by doubling the Tigers in shots, 6-to-3.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Now with 11 goals on the season, Stone's first goal of the match gave her double digits on the season, making her the first player since Rachael Sushner in 2009 to achieve the feat.
  • Goalie Avery Rogers had three key saves that kept the game from getting out of reach.
  • Freshman Olivia Chandler made a terrific defensive save at the net in the first half.
  • Juniors Madison Hallet and Molly Cunningham each recorded a shot on goal.
