SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The No. 18 Thoroughbreds saw its unbeaten start to the season upended in a thrilling top-25 Liberty League matchup against No. 9 Ithaca, as an early second half score proved to be the difference in the 2-1 defeat on Saturday afternoon.
Much like the previous night's match, the Thoroughbreds (8-1-3, 3-1-2 Liberty League) struck first but couldn't fend off a Bombers (10-1-3, 5-1-0 Liberty League) equalizer before falling behind on the go-ahead second half score from the road team.
While a valiant effort was made to recreate the sensational equalizer against RIT just one night earlier, none ultimately materialized against a stout Ithaca defense as Skidmore was handed its first tally in the loss column on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Thoroughbreds got on the scoreboard in the 21st minute on a stellar corner kick from sophomore Ellianna Caporusso that found an uncovered Ashley Downes for a header that bounced uncontested into the goal.
- Just two minutes later, the Bombers delivered the equalizing goal after Ava Detorie broke free from the Thoroughbreds backline and won a one-on-one situation against Skidmore's Avery Rogers.
- Both teams had an opportunity for more in the latter half of the first, with Skidmore junior Molly Cunningham just missing on an uncontested shot that sailed a bit high of the goal in the 39th, and Ithaca hitting the crossbar a moment later.
- Entering halftime, Ithaca held a narrow 9-to-7 edge in shots, while Skidmore generated a 4-to-1 advantage in corner kicks.
- The Bombers came out the second half firing, putting up five shots in the first 13 minutes, with the final shot in the 59th being the go ahead score from Ally Stanton to put Ithaca up 2-1.
- In the latter half of the second, Skidmore generated a couple deep attacks that found the offense on the cusp of an equalizer but none could break through as the Bombers defense did its job in launching the ball to the opposite side of the field at every opportunity.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- Downes' first half score was the senior's third goal on the season
- Caporusso recorded her team-leading sixth assist of the year
