POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Skidmore College women's soccer team couldn't overcome an early goal from St. Lawrence before ultimately suffering a tough 1-0 shutout defeat on the road Saturday afternoon.
Despite being blanked on the scoresheets, the Thoroughbreds (8-2-3, 3-2-2 Liberty League) didn't lack offense as the team outshot the Saints (8-6-1, 2-4-1 Liberty League) by a commanding 17-to-6 margin, as well as generating the lone pair of corner kicks in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints struck first in the 23rd minute to put the Thoroughbreds in an early deficit.
- Looking to even the scoresheets entering the second half, the Thoroughbreds put pressure on the St. Lawrence defensive third with extensive attacks that kept the offense within position to strike.
- The junior duo of Madison Hallet and Molly Cunningham each placed shots on goal for Skidmore in the 57th and 59th minutes, but both were gloved by the Saints goalkeeper.
- A further Thoroughbreds shot attempt by senior Ella Stone in the 72nd minute made its way towards the bottom right corner of the net, but was also saved.
- The Thoroughbreds spent the final 15 minutes of the game almost entirely on the offensive third, by consistently gaining control of the ball and stringing together quick passes that turned into shot attempts against a swarming St. Lawrence defense desperate to punt the ball opposite side at every opportunity.
- Skidmore finished the second half holding a massive 11-to-3 shots advantage, but simply couldn't find the equalizing goal.
