Saints down Thoroughbreds in conference opener

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Skidmore College field hockey team lost the Liberty League opener in heart-breaking fashion, falling 2-1 to St. Lawrence after conceding the game winning goal with just seconds remaining on the clock on Saturday.

The Thoroughbreds (4-5, 0-1 Liberty League) struck first in the 31st minute and outshot the Saints (4-4, 1-0 Liberty League) by a lopsided 29-to-12 margin, but it ultimately wasn't enough as the road team tied things up in the 38th minute and avoided overtime by punching in the game winner with six seconds to go.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first half, senior CC Wetter quickly put the Thoroughbreds on the board in just 28 seconds by scoring off an assist from sophomore Colby Paul.
  • The Saints tied things up seven minutes later in the third after scoring off a rebound from an initial Victoria Bodnar save, tying things up at one apiece.
  • Skidmore closed out the third period with a relentless attack, but were neutralized by excellent goalie play from St. Lawrence's Cara Vrendenburg, who recorded six saves in the final seven minutes of the quarter alone to keep the game tied. The Saints also negated a seventh Skidmore shot attempt in that frame on a defensive save.
  • The fourth played out as a scoreless affair for majority of the period, with Bodnar making five consecutive saves to keep the Saints off the board.
  • However, with overtime looming, St. Lawrence generated a final penalty corner opportunity with 12 seconds to go, and capitalized with six ticks left to take the victory in regulation.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Bodnar finished with 10 saves coming off her record-breaking performance at Middlebury,
  • Wetter placed five shots on goal to go with her score
  • Abby Ezickson and Catie O'Rourke had four shots on goal each
