SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Playing in front of a large Stable Game crowd, the Skidmore College field hockey team fired on all cylinders offensively to dominate St. John Fisher, 5-1, at Wagner Park on Sunday afternoon.
With five different goal scorers in the match, the Thoroughbreds (4-3) put together a balanced attack that outshot the Cardinals (2-6) by a sizable margin of 25-to-9 while also generating a 12-to-5 penalty corners advantage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Thoroughbreds struck early in quick succession during the first quarter, with senior Kayla Hassett finding the back of the cage just three minutes into the game off a quick touch pass from fellow senior CC Wetter.
- In the seventh minute, sophomore Erin Ohlenbusch scored her first goal as a Thoroughbred after she shot the ball past the Cardinals goalie a slew of players and into the back of the goal after receiving the pass from junior Anna D'Amore.
- St. John Fisher got on the board 3:44 into the second quarter on a solo goal which slashed the Skidmore lead in half, 2-1.
- The Thoroughbreds pulled away in the middle of the third period after scoring a pair of goals within a 90 second time span. The former came on a penalty corner and in the form of a Wetter tap in right through the goalie's legs after receiving the stellar feed from Ohlenbusch.
- The latter goal came on a wild scramble for the ball deep within the shooting circle that ultimately ended with Beth Yorns shooting the ball past the goalie and an additional defender to put the Thoroughbreds comfortably up 4-1.
- Junior Mia Angwin put the finishing touches to the win in the 57th minute of the match after scoring off a rebound from a saved Colby Paul initial shot attempt.
