Bodnar shines in Thoroughbreds loss at Salve Regina

MIDDLETOWN, RI – Despite a career performance at goal from senior Victoria Bodnar, the Skidmore College field hockey team fell on the road, 2-3, in a competitive match against Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon.

Bodnar finished her day making 18 saves against the Seahawks, representing the most in a single game by a Thoroughbred since Haley McDougall stopped 19 shot attempts against Middlebury back in the 2012 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bodnar made six saves in the first quarter, keeping an aggressive Salve Regina offense off the board through one frame.
  • Skidmore struck first early in the second, when senior CC Wetter found sophomore Catie O'Rourke for the 1-0 lead.
  • The Seahawks responded in the 29th minute of the first half to tie the game, before promptly taking the lead in the opening minutes of the third.
  • Looking to keep the deficit at just one score, Bodnar had a brilliant close to the third, making seven saves and neutralizing four Salve Regina corners in the final 12 minutes of the quarter.
  • However, the Seahawks' relentless attack would finally break through once again, this time on a penalty corner early in the fourth, to take a decisive 3-1 lead.
  • In a last-minute comeback bid, senior Beth Yorns gave Skidmore life in the 58th minute, notching her first goal of the season in solo fashion to bring the green and yellow back within one score.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Bodnar saved six shots in the first, two in the second, eight in the third and two in the fourth on her career day
  • O'Rourke's first half goal represented her first as a Thoroughbred
