Thoroughbreds battle Utica to 1-1 tie in opener

UTICA, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's soccer team fell behind early but scored in the middle of the first half and the result held in a 1-1 draw with Utica University on the road on Friday evening.
 
  • Sophomore Colin Goodhines was the goal scorer for the Thoroughbreds. He knotted the score at one in the 26th minute off a Cole Rogan feed.
  • Utica scored first on a Noah Nassberg tally in the eighth minute. Two Pioneers – Anderson Valazquez and Martin Mendoza – assisted.
  • In the tightly contested contest, team stats were nearly identical. Both teams had four shots on goal, and total shots favored the hosts 13-12.
  • Skidmore goalkeeper Will Devall made three saves. As did Utica netminder Foti Xidias.
  • Goodhines led Skidmore with three shots. Two of them were on frame.
  • Josh Hocheiser also had three shots off the bench in 31 minutes of action for Skidmore.
  • Velazquez had five shots for the hosts.
  • Skidmore had each of the four corners of the first half and six out of nine for the game.
  • Skidmore pressed for the go-ahead goal late, firing each of the final two shots of the game off. Hocheiser let off a shot in the final seconds of regulation that Xidias handled cleanly to preserve the tie.
  • This was the first meeting between the teams since 2021. Skidmore extends its unbeaten streak against Utica to five (3-0-2). The series dating back to 2005 has Skidmore ahead 6-2-4.
NEXT UP: The Thoroughbreds open at home next weekend with back-to-back non-league games against SUNY Geneseo and WPI.
