Skidmore charges through Baruch, 5-0, in NCAA opener

AMHERST, Mass. – The Skidmore College women's tennis team breezed to a shutout, 5-0 victory over Baruch College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
  • The Thoroughbreds, ranked 32nd nationally, will play host and eighth-ranked Amherst in a second-round match on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
  • The shutout was a repeat of the 2022 tournament opener, also played at Amherst against the Bearcats.
  • Skidmore is 13-5 on the year. Baruch, the CUNYAC champion, ends at 12-4.
  • Beilynn Geiss was a double winner to lead Skidmore. She did not lose a game in either of her matches. In doubles, she and Katherine Almquist worked an 8-0 win at No. 3 over Love/Calvo. At fifth singles, she clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Keila Pagan.
  • Her doubles partner Almquist was on match point one court over when the match was clinched. She also did not drop a game.
  • Konika Dhull and Grace Truong put the Thoroughbreds ahead 2-0 with an 8-1 win at first doubles.
  • Ella Provost and Katie Wong closed out the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over Sheludenko/Yadav at No. 2.
  • Coco Prokop went in and cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Maria Calvo at No. 6 singles. It put Skidmore one point away, where Geiss beat Almquist on the race to five.
  • Katelyn Corpuz wasn no far behind. She swept the first set and was ahead 4-0 in the second at No. 5. 
  • Dhull endured a pair of early breaks to take the first set over Ava Deguzman in the No. 1 match, 6-4. They were early in the second set what the match ended.
  • Wong was still in the first set in her singles match but had a 5-4 lead over Aishika Yadav.
  • Skidmore will battle the Mammoths Saturday for the right to advance to the Regional Final. Last season, Skidmore beat Drew in the second round to reach its first Regional Final since 2021.
