Thoroughbreds finish weekend sweep, secure first-round bye with 8-1 win over Ithaca

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's tennis team won eight out of nine matches on Saturday as it completed a weekend home sweep with a victory over visiting Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon.
  • Skidmore, ranked 38th nationally, clinched the second seed in next week's Liberty League Championship in Ithaca. The Thoroughbreds will play wither RPI or Ithaca in a semifinal on Saturday, May 4.
  • Skidmore has won each of the last 12 league titles.
  • The Thoroughbreds wrap the regular season 10-5 in dual matches and 7-1 in the Liberty League. Skidmore has defeated the Bombers in all 13 head-to-head matches dating back to the fall of 2005.
  • The Bombers are 8-9 overall, 3-5 in the league and will be seeded sixth in the tournament.
  • Skidmore was in the driver's seat after winning all three doubles matches.
  • Konika Dhull and Grace Truong grabbed an 8-3 win at No. 1
  • Ella Provost and Katie Wong won 8-2 at No. 2.
  • Beilynn Geiss and Katherine Almquist shut out their opponent, 8-0.
  • Skidmore went on to win five out of six doubles matches.
  • Almquist lost just one game in her win at No. 5.
  • Truong was ahead in the second set after claiming the first before her opponent retired.
  • Provost got her second win of the afternoon in the fourth match (6-2, 6-3).
  • Wong bounced back after a tiebreaker loss in the first set to win in three (6-7[5-7], 6-3, 10-5).
  • Ithaca's only win of the match was at first singles, where Taylor Crain narrowly beat Dhull (6-2, 0-6, 10-8).
  • From head coach Curt Speerschneider: "Good to close out the regular season with some wins.  We had some mental and physical ups and downs throughout the weekend, which is relatively normal after a long season.  These players have been putting it out there since early February.  The hard work is about to pay off though as we get into the post-season.  That's what we train for and that's when we achieve our goals.  We're looking forward to playing our best tennis next weekend."
