Battle of Liberty League’s unbeaten goes to Vassar, 5-4

Battle of Liberty League's unbeaten goes to Vassar, 5-4
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – In a battle of top-40 ranked teams, #40 Vassar defeated the nationally 35th-raked Skidmore College women's tennis team in a potential postseason preview, 5-4, in Poughkeepsie on Sunday afternoon.
  • Vassar has now won three regular season matches in a row against Skidmore, but the Thoroughbreds came back to defeat the Brewers in the league title match both times previously. In Skidmore's active run of 12 straight Liberty League championships, six in a row, and 11-of-12, have been won against Vassar.
  • Skidmore won the first two doubles matches before the Brewers got on the board with a tiebreak win at No. 3.
  • Skidmore got the first point in the first match. Konika Dhull and Grace Truong played to an 8-3 win over McCusker/Dowd.
  • Ella Provost and Katie Wong came out ahead 7-4 in a tiebreak over Li/Kirby for the 2-0 Skidmore lead.
  • Vassar came charging back in singles with wins at Nos. 2, 6, 4 to take a 4-2 lead.
  • Dhull got her second win of the day at first singles to pull the Thoroughbreds to within one point. She took down McCusker 6-4, 6-3.
  • Kirby clinched the victory for the Brewers in the fifth match.
  • Wong scored Skidmore's fourth point with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 triumph over Li at No. 3.
  • From head coach Curt Speerschneider: "We played well but let them off the hook a bit. In a close match like this, unforced errors can really make a difference and we had a few too many of those. We came out very strong in doubles and did exactly what we wanted to, but it's hard to maintain momentum and close out matches when unforced keep getting in the way. I think we pressed a bit too much and weren't willing enough to play long points. The good thing is that we competed well and immediately identified what we could've done better. We know what we're capable of and we'll be that much more prepared for the upcoming conference tournament. We're looking forward to the last week of regular season and then the post season."
NEXT UP: Skidmore will close the regular season next weekend with home matches against Union (Friday, 6 p.m.) and Ithaca (Saturday, 2 p.m.).
