Thoroughbreds split doubleheader at Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Skidmore College baseball team faced Clarkson University in a doubleheader and the Thoroughbreds used a five-run ninth inning to capture the first game, 5-2. The Golden Knights won the seven-inning nightcap 4-1.

Skidmore 5, Clarkson 2

  • The Thoroughbreds scored five times with one out in the top of the ninth inning.
  • A walk, a single and a fielder's choice put runners on first and second with one out. Sophomore Eddie Galvao singled to right field to load the bases. A walk to the next batter, Andy Pelc, brought home Sam Kornet for Skidmore's first run.
  • Following a pitching change, reliever Derrick Lewis induced a short fly ball that the right fielder caught while sliding in foul territory and the Thoroughbreds were down to their final out with the bases loaded.
  • Jaden Torrado, the team's leadoff hitter, walked to force in the tying run and Shaw Pedemonti put the visitors ahead with a single in the shortstop hole.
  • A two-RBI single to center by the next batter, Trey Bourque, made it 5-2.
  • Sophomore Sam Dalismar pitched a perfect ninth inning, getting a pair of fly outs and a strikeout, to earn the save.
  • Skidmore starter Ameer Hasan allowed one unearned run and six hits in 7.0 innings before giving way to Christian Giresi, who earned the win.
  • Clarkson's Nicholas Hofaker allowed three runs on five hits in 8.1 innings.
  • Pedemonti had multiple hits (2 for 5) with an RBI and Bourque had two runs batted in.
  • The Golden Knights, who scored once in the sixth inning and once in the eighth, saw Aidan Kuefner go 2 for 4 with a double, a run, and an RBI.

Clarkson 4, Skidmore 1

  • Two unearned runs in the first inning, another in the third, and an RBI single in the fourth put the Thoroughbreds in a 4-0 hole.
  • Skidmore got back-to-back, two-out singles from seniors Jaden Torrado and Shaw Pedemonti (bunt) in the third inning but could not get them across the plate.
  • The Thoroughbreds avoided being shutout with a run in the seventh and final inning.
  • Owen Roy doubled and moved to third on a ground out. He came across on a sacrifice fly from Quinn McDonald.
  • Five different players had single hits for the Thoroughbreds, who got 4.0 innings from Chase Siegel (loss) and 1.0 from both Ethan Barnett and Quinn Hocom.
  • Mateo Sarabia threw a complete game for Clarkson, which had six hits on offense.
  • Skidmore's season record is now 14-10 and the Golden Knights are 8-14.

UP NEXT: The Thoroughbreds travel to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Wednesday for a single game (4 p.m.) before playing Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in a three-game, Liberty League series over the weekend.
