Thoroughbreds salvage game 2, 10-3, for split with Plattsburgh

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team pounded out 10 runs on 15 hits to take the second game of a doubleheader with Plattsburgh State, 10-3, to salvage a split of the twinbill with the Cardinals. The Thoroughbreds, who snapped an eight-game losing streak, is now 3-11 on the season. Plattsburgh, which won the first game 5-4, is 3-7.

  • Trailing 5-1 heading into the sixth inning, the Thoroughbreds scored once in the sixth inning and twice in the seventh but left the tying run on base.
  • In the sixth, senior Grace O'Connell singled, stole second base, and scored on a single by freshman Rachel Monser.
  • The seventh inning began with Bernie Berner reaching on an error and then moving to second on another error following a lineout. She scored on a double to right by Franchesca Casillas.
  • Casillas came around on a single by sophomore Claire Stone.
  • After a pitching change, Stone moved to second base on a wild pitch and then to third on a ground out but she was stranded there.
  • The Cardinals scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead. They used three hits, an error, and a pair of stolen bases in doing so.
  • Skidmore's first run, which came in the third inning, was plated thanks to a bunt single by Elle Harrison that scored Stone.
  • Stone and Monser both had two of the eight hits the Thoroughbreds collected. Hailey Clarke went the distance and took the loss.
  • Graduate student Julia Golino pitched 6.1 innings to get the win with Sarah Milyko, a junior, registering the save.
  • Both teams had eight hits, four runs batted in, and six strikeouts.
 
Skidmore 10, Plattsburgh State 3
  • The Thoroughbreds scored in each of its six innings at the plate for leads of 4-0 after three, 8-3 after four, and 9-3 after five.
  • Six players had multiple hits, led by senior designated player Franchesca Casillas, who was 3 for 4 with two doubles, a run, and two runs batted in.
  • Leadoff hitter Cortney Somsky was 2 for 4 with three runs, two RBI and a stolen base; Grace O'Connell was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI; and Bernie Berner had a 3 for 3 day with a double, a walk, two runs and a run batted in.
  • Freshman Natalie Mayne had a double with two runs batted in while throwing 3.1 inning of relief to earn the win.
  • Somsky scored the first run of the game and then drove in the next two with a single to left field.
  • A third inning single by Berner plated Casillas for a 4-0 lead. It was a double by Casillas that scored Somsky in the first.
  • Emma Deo had a two-run single to center in the fourth inning to bring the Cardinals to within 4-2.
  • Skidmore answered with four runs in the fourth thanks to RBIs from O'Connell, Casillas, and two from Mayne.
  • The Thoroughbreds finished with seven stolen bases with Berner and Mallory Allen notching two apiece. Allen also had two hits, a walk and a run.
  • Alyssa Hemingway had two hits for Plattsburgh State. Starter Morgan Ormerod took the loss.
 
UP NEXT: Skidmore heads to SUNY Delhi for a non-league doubleheader on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 3pm. The Thoroughbreds host Russell Sage College for two on Wednesday (3 p.m.).
