Diplomats surge late to defeat Thoroughbreds 8-6

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Skidmore College baseball team continued its Spring Break trip by facing Franklin & Marshall College in a single game on Thursday and the Thoroughbreds suffered an 8-6 defeat. Skidmore drops to 3-5 overall with three more contests in the Sunshine State. The Diplomats improve to 3-9.
 
  • The Thoroughbreds took an early lead when centerfielder Andy Pelc drove home Jaden Torrado with a double in the second inning.
  • Skidmore made it 3-0 in the next frame when it manufactured a pair of runs, taking advantage to score on a wild pitch and an error.
  • An unearned run by Franklin & Marshall in the fourth inning closed the gap to 3-1, but catcher Trey Bourque plated Eddie Galvao in the seventh inning for a 4-1 lead.
  • The Diplomats took a 7-4 lead with six runs, all with two outs, on four hits off three different pitchers in their half of the inning.
  • The Thoroughbreds answered with a single run when Sam Kornet scored on an error in the eighth to cut the deficit to 7-5.
  • Michael van Zubin's second hit of the game knocked in Franklin & Marshall's eighth run in their half.
  • In the ninth, Bourque scored an unearned run on a single by Zachary Leiderman and the Thoroughbreds had the tying runs on base but were unable to score again.
  • Kornet had two hits, including a double, and a run while five others had single hits. Senior designated hitter Jakob Hoffman had two hits, two runs and two RBI for the Diplomats.
  • Thomas McLaughlin earned the win, Dax Bush the save, and Cal Champeau the loss. All three pitched in relief.
  • Skidmore starter Chase Siegel earned a quality start in the no decision. He went 6.1 innings and allowed just three hits and two earned runs. He struck out seven and walked two.
 
NEXT UP: Skidmore is scheduled to play Wisconsin Lutheran College (9 a.m.) and Ohio Wesleyan University (12 p.m.) on Friday as it continues in the Gene Cusic Classic.
