Game Recap: Softball |

Thoroughbreds swept in second day in Florida

LEESBURG, Fla. – The Skidmore College softball team was defeated twice on Monday. The Thoroughbreds were victim to a perfect pitching performance in game one against #11 Bethel University, 7-1, before fighting off the run rule in a 9-2 loss to McDaniel College in game two.

#11 Bethel 7, Skidmore 0
  • Bethel ace Kayla Simacek was perfect. She retired all 21 Skidmore batters she faced with 11 strikeouts for the perfect game. She threw 64 of her 73 pitches (88 percent) for strikes.
  • Simacek only got to one three-ball count and one two-ball count. Both were to Rachel Monser. She threw nothing but strikes to eight consecutive hitters in the middle of the game. In the seventh, she made back-to-back close plays on bunts to close out her sixth career no-hitter.
  • Bethel scored three in the first, two in the second, and one each in the fifth and sixth.
  • Natalie Mayne was effective in relief for the Thoroughbreds. She allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts over four innings of work.

McDaniel 9, Skidmore 2
  • The Green Terror scored eight runs on eight hits (all singles) with three Skidmore errors in the top of the second inning.
  • McDaniel added one more in the third to make it 9-0.
  • Skidmore was down to its final out in the fifth, but got under the eight-run threshold when Caitlyn Dion walked and Claire Stone was hit by a pitch both with the bases loaded.
  • Mallory Allen and Grace O'Connell singled along with a Cortney Somsky walk to load the bases.
  • O'Connell was 3-for-4 with a stolen base.
  • Madi Gambino and game one starter Hailey Clarke combined to limit the Green Terror to one run over a combined 5.1 innings of relief.
  • Somsky made a pair of highlight reel catches in the McDaniel half of the seventh. She ran to the foul line to track down a fly ball for the second out and made a diving catch running in to end the inning three pitches later.

NEXT UP: After a day off, Skidmore returns to the field Wednesday for games against SUNY Fredonia (10:30 a.m.) and Trinity College (Conn.) (3 p.m.).
