Springfield holds off Thoroughbreds, 16-12

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team lost a tight 16-12 non-league game to Springfield College Wednesday evening. The Thoroughbreds are 0-2 to start the season, while the Pride moves to 2-0.
  • Jillian Lockwood tied her career-high with five goals to lead Skidmore. Gabriella Modesti added three goals and an assist, while Maeve McKinley added two goals and five draw controls.
  • Izzy Laiancette led Springfield with five goals. Maddie Roy had a goal, assist and six draws.
  • Skidmore went up 2-1 early on a Lockwood free position at 9:36 of the first quarter. Springfield scored three of the next four to go back in front 4-3. Julia Cafasso tied it 4-4 with 1:04 left to finish the quarter.
  • The Pride used a 4-1 run to open the second period, before Grace deBenedictis and McKinley scored late goals to keep it a one-goal game at the break, 8-7.
  • The third quarter opened with three straight Springfield goals and an 11-7 Pride lead and a 13-9 advantage at the end of the third.
  • Modesti got the Thoroughbreds to within three, 13-10 at 14:12 of the fourth, but that was a close as Skidmore would get.
  • Springfield outshot Skidmore 32-26, while the Thoroughbreds had a 17-15 edge in draws.
  • Isabella Iannone (5) and Liv Kazanjian (4) combined for nine saves.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore travels to Williams on March 2 for the second of four straight Thoroughbred road games.
