Second-quarter surge propels Vassar over Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — The Skidmore College women's basketball team fell to visiting Vassar 69-54 on Wednesday evening in the first rematch of the 2024 Liberty League Championship game.
  • Despite a strong start and late push, Skidmore (4-4, 2-1 Liberty League) was unable to overcome a second quarter in which the Brewers (5-2, 2-1 Liberty League) outscored the Thoroughbreds 24-4.
  • Senior Sarah Chambers led Skidmore with 16 points and seven rebounds, going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and 3-for-4 at the free-throw line. Chambers had three out of Skidmore's four 3-pointers.
  • Junior Madison Meyer added 10 points, while senior Cassie Davidson contributed eight points, five rebounds, and two steals.
  • The Thoroughbreds capitalized on turnovers, scoring 25 points off Vassar's miscues, but finished below 30 percent shooting for the night.
  • Vassar was paced by a dominant performance from Tova Gelb, who notched a double-double with 28 points and 19 rebounds while also tallying seven assists and five steals. Nineteen of her points were scored in the first half.
  • Julia Harvey added 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Brewers, who shot 42.1 percent from the field and converted 85.7 percent (18-of-21) of their free throws.
  • After a tight opening 10 minutes, the Brewers pulled away in the second quarter., scoring 17 unanswered points, to take a 39-17 advantage into halftime.
  • The visitors expanded their lead to a game-high 23 points early in the second half, but Skidmore responded with a 12-3 run to cut the deficit to single digits at nine. Emmy Plage and Meyer both scored four as Skidmore made 4-of-10 shots from the field and had four steals over the five-plus minute surge.
  • Vassar again put it out of reach by scoring nine out of the next 10. Harvey had six of them as the Brewer lead stretched to 17 with under five to go.
  • Both teams scored 28 points in the paint and eight second-chance points.
  • Skidmore's bench outscored Vassar's 23-8.
