Skidmore offense comes alive in second half for 61-49 opening win at Mount Saint Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team outscored host Mount Saint Mary 42-27 in the second half on Friday evening to win 61-49 on the road to begin the 2024-25 season.
  • After managing to score just 19 points in the first half, Skidmore scored 21 in both the third and fourth quarters and the defense stood up to edge the Knights by a dozen.
  • Emmy Plage led the way for Skidmore with 16 points off the bench. The Thoroughbreds scored 27 of their 61 points (44.3 percent) from non-starters. Plage added seven rebounds, two blocks, and one steal.
  • Claudia Schneider scored 13 points with two blocks, two steals, one assist, and two boards.
  • Sarah Chambers recorded a team-high 10 boards on the evening and finished with six points and two blocks.
  • The Thoroughbreds were cold to start, going 2-for-14 in the first quarter but trailed by just three.
  • Skidmore picked it up immediately, shooting 47.6 percent from the field the rest of the way.
  • Both teams scored 13 points in the second quarter giving the hosts the lead by three at the break.
  • Schneider drilled a 3-pointer in the first possession of the second half to tie it up. Then, Plage rolled off eight of her points in the third quarter leading Skidmore to a one-point lead into the fourth.
  • Skidmore found its way from distance, going 6-for-12 from beyond the arc over the second and third quarters.
  • In the back-and-forth third period, Mount Saint Mary took a one-point lead, 36-35, on a Ciarra Quin layup with 1:44 left. Sophia Martinez hit a jumper on the other end for the Thoroughbreds to give the team the lead for good. Martinez scored eight points in 16 minutes in her collegiate debut.
  • Neither team had a double-digit lead in the game until the final minute, when Skidmore drained five out of six at the foul line. A Schneider layup with 28 seconds left completed the scoring.
  • Skidmore was 10-of-12 (83.3 percent) for the night at the charity stripe. Mount Saint Mary finished 5-of-10.
  •  The Thoroughbreds held an edge in fast-break points (13-3) and posted a narrow 22-20 margin in points in the paint. Skidmore out-rebounded Mount Saint Mary 43-34.
  • The Knights scored 21 points off 24 Skidmore turnovers.
  • Erin Lofaro led the way for the hosts with 17 points and five boards. Elizabeth Lofaro registered 15 points and a pair of steals.
