ITHACA, NY – The Skidmore College women's soccer team couldn't break through a tough defensive effort from Ithaca to ultimately fall 2-0 in the Liberty League Semifinals on Friday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds (11-3-3) fell behind early when the Bombers (13-2-3) struck in the opening minutes, and saw their playoff run hopes put on the brink when the home team tacked on an insurance goal in a similar fashion to start the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bombers first struck in the eighth minute on a free kick by Allison Heft from well inside Skidmore's defensive third that connected with Rosie Bostian for the score.
- The Thoroughbreds saw a first half equalizing chance wiped away in the 33rd when an on-target Ella Stone shot was saved by Ithaca's goalie.
- Entering half, the Bombers held an 8-to-4 shots advantage and created the lone pair of corner kicks.
- Ithaca blitzed the Skidmore defense to begin the second half by generating a pair of shots within the first two minutes, the latter of which found the back of the net off the foot of Sarah Sinnott to put the Thoroughbreds on the brink of elimination.
- Looking to get back into the game, the Thoroughbreds generated some attacking opportunities in the remainder parts of the match, particularly a shot on target from Hazel Aiello in the 57th minute alongside other shots that sailed just off target.
- The Bombers nearly secured a third goal in the 72nd on a breakaway in transition, but excellent goalie play from junior Avery Rogers shut down the chance.
