Thoroughbreds unable to catch up to sharp-shooting Cortland

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Cortland shot 75 percent (9-of-12) in the second quarter highlighting a night that saw the team shoot 51 percent overall from the field to defeat the Skidmore College women's basketball team, 68-52, on Tuesday.
  • Skidmore drops to 2-3 on the season, while Cortland improves to 2-1.
  • Skidmore opened strong with a 19-13 lead after the first quarter but was outscored 22-9 in the second and never regained the lead.
  • Skidmore led for all but 1:48 in the first quarter, stretching its advantage to as many as eight.
  • The Red Dragons, after missing their first shot in the second quarter, drained nine out of their next 10 shots to open up a seven-point lead into recess. Kayla Campbell scored eight points during the run, and Jackie Funk had five.
  • The Thoroughbreds kept pace in the third quarter, 12 points a side, before the Red Dragons broke away by scoring the first eight points of the fourth period.
  • Cassie Davidson and Sophia Martinez paced Skidmore with nine points apiece. Davidson grabbed four rebounds, while Martinez finished with two steals and an assist.
  • Sarah Chambers added eight points and a team-high seven boards.
  • Campbell led the visitors with 14 points on 7-for-12 shooting and six rebounds.
  • Cortland took advantage of turnovers, scoring 23 points off Skidmore's 20 giveaways. Skidmore scored 14 points off 22 Red Dragon turnovers.
  • The Thoroughbreds finished with 17 steals. Emmy Plage led with five.
  • Skidmore shot 31.4 percent from the field and 63.2 percent from the free-throw line, while Cortland shot 50.9 percent from the field and made all six of its shots from the line.
  • Cortland doubled up Skidmore, 28-14, in the paint.
  • Both teams made eight 3-pointers. Skidmore was 8-for-20; Cortland finished 8-for-16.
