Thoroughbreds fall in home opener to Middlebury, 56-43

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team dropped a 56-43 decision to Middlebury on Tuesday evening for the team's home opener. The Panthers improve to 2-1 on the young season, while the Thoroughbreds drop to 1-2.  
  • Sophomore Claudia Schneider finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and a block for Skidmore.
  • Cassie Davidson also had 11 points with team highs in assists (3) and steals (2). Schneider and Davidson both also had one block.
  • Sarah Chambers pulled down nine boards and finished with eight points.
  • Middlebury's Alexa Mustafaj led all players with 25 points on a 9-of-20 shooting night. She went 3-for-9 from long range, had two steals, three assists, and two rebounds.
  • Calie Messina had 11 points for the Panthers to go with six rebounds.
  • The Thoroughbreds scored all eight of their first-quarter points in the first 2:20. The Panthers ended the quarter by scoring 12 unanswered on 5-of-9 shooting and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
  • Skidmore held the Panthers scoreless for just under five minutes in the second quarter, but a Keeley Baglio layup with 30 seconds left gave the visitors a 7-5 decision in the period and a 22-13 lead into the half.
  • The Thoroughbreds, led by Schneider's seven points, closed the gap in the first half of the third quarter going on a 13-8 run to pull to within four. The Panthers responded with eight unanswered over a two-minute span stretching the lead to 12. The advantage sat at 10 at the end of three quarters.
  • Skidmore got to as close as seven in the fourth before 3-pointers from Baglio and Mustafaj down the stretch put the contest out of reach.
  • Middlebury won the turnover margin, 18-12, and scored 19 points off turnovers to Skidmore's nine.
  • The Thoroughbreds finished with a 16-14 edge in points in the paint.
