Skidmore falls to Clarkson in Liberty League First Round

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team completed its 2024 season with a four-set loss (12-25, 25-20, 19-25, 20-25) to Clarkson in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament on Tuesday night. Skidmore was making its second consecutive postseason appearance.
  • The Thoroughbreds finish the season 12-16.
  • Clarkson (13-14) will take on William Smith in the conference semifinals on Friday in Ithaca.
  • For Skidmore, Jazlin Chen led the way with 13 kills, four blocks (two solo), two digs, and an assist. She hit .367 for the night.
  • Natalie Pedersen had nine kills and six digs.
  • Catriona Hoelperl finished with 22 assists, two aces, and six digs, while Athena Braverman had a match-high 28 digs.
  • Marin Hangliter led Clarkson with 14 kills. Allyson Treichel had 10 kills and four blocks.
  • Clarkson finished with big edges in aces (14-5) and blocks (12-5). Cecilia Velardi has seven aces.
  • Skidmore won the first point of the night, but the Golden Knights rolled off eight out of the next tone setting the tone for a dominant first set.
  • Skidmore responded in the second. Skidmore held the lead, and was ahead by as many as five, when Clarkson made a push back. Later, after plenty of back-and-forth action, Skidmore scored 4-of-5 to take a 20-17 lead. Rudi Reyes and Chen teamed up for a block to send the match to set three all tied at one apiece.
  • The Thoroughbreds led only at 5-4 and 6-5 in the third. They did work their way to a tie at 13 until the Golden Knights scored seven unanswered to achieve an insurmountable lead.
  • The hosts raced out to an 11-7 cushion in the fourth until Skidmore pulled to within one on a quick 4-1 run.  Clarkson then won five straight points out of a timeout pushing its lead to six. The Thoroughbreds, again, didn't go down quietly, mounting another 5-1 push closing to within two.
  • Another well-timed Clarkson timeout led to three-straight points and a five-point lead. Skidmore was able to get two back before the Golden Knights ended it.
