Thoroughbreds punch postseason ticket with 1-0 Union victory

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's soccer team clinched its spot in the 2024 Liberty League Tournament with a 1-0 victory over visiting Union on Wednesday in the penultimate regular season contest of the year at Wachenheim Field.
  • Skidmore improves to 5-3-6 and 4-2-2 (14 points) in the Liberty League with its fourth win in its last five games. The Thoroughbreds can finish anywhere from third to a tie for fifth. Skidmore and Hobart are currently tied for third.
  • Union (5-8-5, 1-4-3 Liberty League) has been eliminated from postseason contention with the loss.
  • Connor Mansfield was the goal-scorer for the Thoroughbreds in just the fourth minute. In the box, he made a few quick moves to keep possession before a successful give-and-go with Nick Jardim. With defenders closing in around him, he kept the left boot inside the top-right corner for the early go-ahead goal.
  • Skidmore yielded just three shots in the first half, but Union controlled possession in the second.
  • It came to a head in the 68th minute when a Skidmore defender was whistled for a foul in the penalty area. Will Devall made the most important of his five saves when he reached all the way to his left on a dive to keep the attempt from Owen Everett out.
  • The shutout is Devall's fifth of the year and third in his last four. Devall has now surrendered just eight goals in 13 games (0.62 goals-against average) and has surrendered one goal or fewer in all but one match.
  • Mansfield's goal was his second of the year and first since Skidmore's 3-0 win at Springfield on Sept. 14. It was the first game winner of his career.
  • Total shots finished 14-8 Union thanks to an 11-2 second half. Shots on goal were 5-3. Devall's counterpart, Jackson Magee, had two stops in goal for the Garnet Chargers.
  • Skidmore has now won three out of the last four meetings with Union.
  • The win was Skidmore's first this season at home (1-3-2).
