Thoroughbreds fall to No. 21 Rochester

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Despite a two-goal performance from sophomore Colby Paul, the Skidmore College field hockey team couldn't overcome a tie-breaking fourth quarter score to ultimately fall to No. 21 Rochester, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (8-8, 2-3 Liberty League) struck first and retook the lead to begin the second half, but it was the ranked Yellow Jackets (13-3, 3-2 Liberty League) who survived the exciting back-and-forth offensive battle to come out on top with a major conference victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Paul's first goal came just 48 seconds into the game as she successfully converted on a penalty corner taken by freshman Ella Costa to put the Thoroughbreds up early.
  • The Yellow Jackets responded by scoring the equalizer in the second quarter, in the 26th minute, to tie the game up entering halftime.
  • Skidmore retook the lead midway into the third, in the 43rd minute, after a penalty stroke opportunity was given to Paul, who successfully converted to put the home team back up 2-1.
  • However, Rochester quickly wiped the lead away just 53 seconds later by converting on a penalty corner to once again tie the game up.
  • With the game up in the balance entering the final frame, the Yellow Jackets struck in the 49th minute by successfully converting on yet another penalty corner and scoring the go-ahead goal.
  • The Thoroughbreds had a final equalizing attempt in the 57th minute after generating two consecutive penalty corners, however a shot attempt from senior Beth Yorns was saved by Rochester's goalie.

  • Paul's pair of goals marks her third multi-score performance of the season.
  • Costa's assist marks the third of her career.
