Wetter strikes in clutch to lift Thoroughbreds past William Smith

GENEVA, NY – A late-game CC Wetter goal proved to be the difference as the Skidmore College field hockey team shut out William Smith for a pivotal 1-0 Liberty League victory on the road Friday afternoon.

The senior star struck in the 51st minute of the match, scoring her conference-leading 12th goal of the year, to help the Thoroughbreds (8-7, 2-2 Liberty League) overcome a 17-to-6 shots advantage by the Herons (5-9, 1-3 Liberty League). Senior goalie Victoria Bodnar had a stellar performance of her own, wiping out all 11 shots on goal from the home team to keep Skidmore in the match prior to the go-ahead score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first half that saw both teams combine for three shots on goal, Bodnar kept the Thoroughbreds out of trouble in the third quarter by stopping all six William Smith shot attempts and sending Skidmore into the final period still tied.
  • Wetter broke the scoreless game open in the 51st after receiving a perfectly placed touch pass from freshman Ella Costa and lofting the ball right over the outstretched arms of the Herons' goalie.
  • The Herons had one final gasp in the 59th minute after generating a penalty corner opportunity and immediately getting a high-quality shot attempt on goal, but Bodnar was in the right place to make her 11th and biggest save of the game to help Skidmore hold on for the victory.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Bodnar officially moves into third all-time in program history for saves with 350 in her career, and is only eight away from tying for second.
  • Wetter placed all four shots on goal to go alongside her game winning score
