Thoroughbreds run out of time against Vassar

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team came out on the wrong end of a tight 61-58 tilt with visiting Vassar College on Tuesday.

  • The win for the Brewers sweeps the season series against the Thoroughbreds. Skidmore defeated Vassar in all three matchups last season, including the Liberty League Semifinal.
  • The Brewers are the only unbeaten team in the Liberty League remaining at 6-0. They are 12-1 overall. Skidmore dips to 9-4 and 4-2.
  • A quick two by Madison Meyer made it a two-point Vassar lead with just two seconds remaining. The Brewers hit one out of its two free throw attempts on the other end before Julia Blanck's three-quarter court shot hit the backboard and just rolled off the front rim, which would have sent the game to overtime.
  • Blanck had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead all players on either side in both departments. She also had two blocks. The Liberty League Performer of the Week had three consecutive double-doubles and has gone for 10 or more points in nine games in a row.
  • Amelia Medolla scored 17 points for the Thoroughbreds with a trio of 3-pointers and two assists.
  • Tova Gelb led the visitors with 19 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks, and two steals. Sierra McDermed was close behind with 18 points, eight boards, three blocks, and two steals.
  • Tied at 21 on the last trip down the court in the first half, Andi Levitz drilled a 3-pointer as the clock expired to send the Thoroughbreds to the break with a 24-21 lead.
  • Skidmore led by as many as nine, 24-25, in the third quarter before Vassar ended the period on a 9-0 run to take a one-point lead.
  • Vassar locked it down in the fourth, allowing just one point over a five-minute period to stretch its advantage to seven.
  • The Brewers held off a Skidmore comeback by making 14-of-18 (77.8 percent) free throws in the fourth quarter, to finish at 68.4 percent(26-of-38) for the game.
  • Skidmore was 6-of-12 from the line in the fourth and 58.3 percent (14-of-24) on the evening.
NEXT UP: Skidmore will hit the road to visit RIT and William Smith this weekend.
