Skidmore celebrates seniors, closes dual meet schedule against Rensselaer

RESULTS
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College swimming & diving teams closed out their home schedules against Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.
 
  • The Engineers won the women's side, 208-82, and got a 179-101 margin against the men.
  • Both of Skidmore's top 200-yard medley relay teams came in second. The women's squad of Ginny Hunt, Faye Mooney, Gretchen Gwitt, and Kelly Hsu finished in 1:55.48, while the men (Ryan Delfico, Liam Keating, Brendan Lu, and Jonah Vaynshtok) clocked in at 1:38.11.
  • The fourth event of the day was Skidmore's first win, as Nicolas Sodi won by a sliver in a dramatic come-from-behind triumph in the 1,000-yard freestyle. He finished at 10:04.51, just three-hundredths of a second ahead of RPI's Patrick Epifanio. Brandon Lis was third (10:29.82). In the women's heat, Sabrina Reed was second (11:13.69) and April Cook was third (11:26.66).
  • Hsu (1:58.39) and Lu (1:47.38) swept the 200-yard freestyle event for the Thoroughbreds. Hsu was also second in the 100-yard butterfly, while Lu also claimed honors in the 100-yard butterfly in 52.83 seconds.
  • Also, in the 100-yard butterfly, Reed earned a third-place spot (1:03.88)
  • Gwitt was the winner of the 200-yard butterfly after clocking in at 2:17.32.
  • Caroline Rogers finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.38). Delfico was second in the men's heat in 54.44 seconds. Rogers also grabbed a third-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:22.31), and on the men's side Delfico was second (2:00.39). Delfico also later came in second in the 200-yard IM in 2:00.44.
  • Faye Mooney also had a second-place finish, hers in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.87), where Keating was second in the men's event at 59.97 seconds.
  • Henry Brien finished third in the men's 200-yard butterfly in 2:14.61.
  • Emily Booth picked up a third-place spot in the 50-yard freestyle (26.60). In the men's 50, Owen Magoon also clocked in third (22.92).
  • Tomás Ruiz (220.28) and Josh Amembal (151.65) finished first and third, respectively, in the 3-meter diving event. They later went 2-3 in the 1-meter with scores of 218.03 and 167.78.
  • Vaynshtok came in second in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.85 seconds.
  • Molly Jordan clocked in at 2:45.11 in the 200-yard breaststroke which was good enough for third, and the men's heat had Aidan Darling also come in third at 2:22.20.
  • Katherine Manaresi came in third place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:38.55). As did Lis (5:10.97). Manaresi was later third in the 200-yard IM (2:22.48).
  • The Thoroughbreds closed with two more second-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The women's team (Hsu, Gwitt, Booth, Mooney) finished in 1:44.70, while the men's team (Lu, Sodi, Vaynshtok, Magoon) finished in 1:28.28.
  • Before the meet, Skidmore honored its Class of 2024: April Cook, Devin Herbinger, Alex Jefferson, Molly Jordan, Elissa Miller, Caroline Rogers.
From head coach Jill Greenleaf: "We competed successfully today against perennial league leader RPI here at Skidmore and competed well. Our athletes were able to notch some individual victories in individual events. It was a special day as we were also able to celebrate our six seniors, April, Molly, Elissa, Caroline, Devin, and Alex, in their final home meet. The impact this group had on our team is exceptional."
 
NEXT UP: The Thoroughbreds will compete at the Vassar Sprint Invite next Saturday before the Liberty League Championships Feb. 21-24 at Ithaca.
