Thoroughbreds give Clarkson a scare

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team captured the first set before ultimately falling to visiting Clarkson University in a Liberty League match on Friday night (24-26, 25-21, 25-16, 25-20).
 
  • The Thoroughbreds drop to 7-8 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League.
  • The Golden Knights are 8-4 and 3-0.
  • Senior Jo Blanco and sophomore Jazlin Chen led Skidmore with 10 and nine kills, respectively.
  • Chen also added five total blocks, including three solo stuffs. Blanco had one solo block and a pair of block assists.
  • Maya Stolarz tossed town seven kills in 15 attempts with just one error for a final hitting percentage of .400.
  • After a ferocious start, Skidmore finished with a .126 team swing percentage for the night. Both teams finished the fast first set at .310. Clarkson finished at .237.
  • Tiffany Flores had two service aces to go along with 14 assists. Catriona Hoelperl also had 14 helpers.
  • Athena Braverman and Clarkson libero Abigail Spector each registered 21 digs.
  • Sara Galante and Allyson Treichel carried the load for the Golden Knights with 15 kills each.
  • Each of the first two sets featured seven ties and three lead changes. Skidmore came out of the first game despite a near Clarkson comeback. Down 24-20, the visitors rolled off four straight to tie it up. Back to back attack errors gave Skidmore the set.
  • The second set was tied at 21 before the visitors popped each of the last four points to even the match up.
  • After Clarkson made it 2-1 with a third set win, Skidmore was against the ropes down 23-17 in the fourth. The Thoroughbreds got kills from Blanco and Madison Manning sandwiched around a Clarkson error to get to within three. A Skidmore service error gave the Golden Knights match point, and they ended it on the next play.
NEXT UP: Skidmore will play against Rochester on Saturday at 11 a.m. as part of Skidmore's breast cancer awareness event.
