Skidmore stumped by RIT in tournament opener

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Host Skidmore College fell to third-seeded RIT in game two of the Liberty League Baseball Championship at Castle Diamond on Thursday afternoon, 5-1.

  • The Thoroughbreds will play top-seeded Rochester in an elimination game on Friday morning at 10 a.m. The winner of that game will face the loser of the Ithaca/RIT game later in the day.
  • John Arnold tossed a complete-game four-hitter for the Tigers. He allowed just one unearned run. He struck out nine batters and issued three walks.
  • Skidmore had four singles, one each from the two-through-six hitters in the order: Jackson Hornung, Zachary Leiderman, Max Mello, and Trey Bourque.
  • RIT put up two in the top of the first inning to take first blood. Chris Reilly hit a two-out double off the left-field fence and scored on an Adam Marsh single through the middle. Reilly's two-bagger was the only extra-base hit of the game for either team.
  • In the bottom of the second inning, after Bourque singled to lead off, Anthony Petersen lifted a long fly ball that stayed in the yard for right fielder Ian Libby to make the grab against the fence.
  • Skidmore broke through for one run in the third. Bourque walked with the bases loaded to cut the deficit in half. An infield error loaded the bases to extend the inning to Bourque, who drew a full count walk for the RBI.
  • John Bagley went with a two-strike pitch and singled to right to bring in a pair of runs to make it 4-1 RIT with two outs in the fifth.
  • The Tigers added one more insurance tally in the top of the eighth on a two-out Jarin Moses single.
  • After a long first inning, Skidmore starter Ameer Hasan got through seven innings for the Thoroughbreds. He allowed four runs on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
  • All six runs in the game were scored with two outs.
