Thoroughbreds earn Gator sweep, 4-2, 7-6

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College softball team posted its first doubleheader sweep of the season 4-2 and 7-6 over Russell Sage College Wednesday afternoon at Wagner Park. The Thoroughbreds move to 5-10, while the Gators drop to 6-10.
 
GAME 1
  • Meghan Robertson led off with a triple and scored on a Melissa Mathias double to put the Thoroughbreds up 1-0 in the first.
  • After three scoreless innings, the Gators tied it in the fifth.
  • Skidmore scored three times in the sixth to open a 4-1 lead. Grace O'Connell singled, stole second and move to third on a wild pitch, while Franny Casillas was working a 10-pitch walk. Casillas stole second to put runners on second and third. After an infield pop-up, Claire Stone reached on an infield error, that platted O'Connell and moved Casillas to third, Casillas then scored on an infield ground out. Madi Gambino had a pinch-hit single to score Stone to make it 4-1.
  • Russell Sage threatened in the seventh, but a smooth double play started by Naté Burley at second, followed by an infield pop-up ended the threat.
  • Robertson finished 2-3.
  • Lindsey Raimondi worked out of trouble in the first inning, stranding three Russell Sage baserunners. She settled in, allowing two runs on seven hits, with three walks and six strikeouts.
 
GAME 2
  • The Gators took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Skidmore quickly went in front in its half of the inning on a two-run Casillas home run, her second of the season.
  • Sage went back in front with a pair of runs in the fourth. The Thoroughbreds tied in the bottom of the inning on a Stone RBI single.
  • Skidmore upped the lead to 7-3 with four runs in the sixth. Madison Bonham powered a ball well over the fence in left center for two of the runs. It was her first home run of the season. Robertson had an RBI double to close the scoring.
  • The Gaters battled back with three in the seventh, but the Thoroughbreds held on, with O'Connell making a nice catch on a sinking line drive in seventh for the third out, leaving two Sage runners stranded.
  • Robertson, O'Connell and Stone had two hits each.
  • Robertson picked-up her first win on the mound, going all seven, allowing six runs (four earned) on 12 hits.
  • NEXT UP: The Thoroughbreds host SUNY Delhi in a pair on Saturday at 12 p.m.
