Thoroughbreds take series from Bard with 15-4 win

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College baseball team scored 14 runs on 18 hits on the way to a 14-5 Liberty League East win over Bard College Monday afternoon at Castle Diamond. It was the home opener for the Thoroughbreds who take the weekend series from the Raptors. 2-1. Skidmore is now 13-6 overall and 4-2 in the Liberty League East, while Bard falls to 4-9 and 2-4.
 
  • Bard scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings to go up 4-0. Skidmore responded by scoring six in the second to take the lead for good. The Thoroughbreds added five in the fifth and three more in the seventh.
  • In the second, Danny Melillo and Max Mello each had a two-run singles. Trey Bourque had an RBI double.
  • In the fifth, Anthony Petersen hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot over the left center fence. Bourque followed up with a two-run homer of his own.
  • Two of Skidmore's three runs in the seventh were scored on wild pitches.
  • Bourque had a career-high five hits, including the home run and double. He scored three runs and had three RBI and boosted his batting average to .390. Behind the plate he threw out two runners trying to steal.
  • Mello was 3-5 with two RBI, while Brendan O'Neil, Patersen, and Andy Pelc had two hits each.
  • Ewen Donald (2-0) got the win in relief. He went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. He struck out four and walked two. Christian Giresi finished the game with two scoreless innings, including three strikeouts.
  • Skidmore has scored 10 or more runs in eight of 19 games this season.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will host Castleton University Tuesday at 4 p.m.
