Hornung breaks home run record; Thoroughbreds hit three long balls for 20th win

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior Jackson Hornung set the Skidmore College baseball single season home run record on Wednesday with a mammoth three-run blast in the fifth inning for his 10th homer of the year. Zachary Leiderman hit a two-run shot and Danny Melillo smashed a grand slam for Skidmore as the Thoroughbreds reached the 20-win plateau for the second consecutive season with a 15-11 non-league win over Russell Sage.

  • Hornung's homer broke the tie with current Skidmore assistant coach Pat Geiger '19, who hit nine home runs in the 2019 season.
  • Hornung is the program's career home run leader now with 20. He finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, a double, and a walk.
  • Melillo's first-career home run came with one out in the bottom of the second inning after two walks and a hit batsmen loaded the bases for the Skidmore (20-13) leadoff man. It made the score 4-1. Melillo finished 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored.
  • Sage (15-19) came back with three runs in the third to make it a one-run game.
  • Skidmore plated six in the last of the third. Leiderman demolished a 1-1 pitch long over the fence in left field for a two-run jack. Later in the inning, Anthony Mollica hit a two-RBI double over the first base bag. Hornung singled up the middle to score one more before Max Mello, who singled and scored to lead off the frame, beat the wrap at first on a potential double-play ball to bring in Skidmore's 10th run.
  • Sage did not go away and plated two on back-to-back errors in the fourth and four in the fifth on four hits and two more errors to tie the game at 10.
  • Hornung's blast in the bottom of the fifth after Mollica and Melillo walked gave Skidmore the lead back for good.
  • After Sage pulled to within two in the seventh, Skidmore completed the scoring in the bottom half on run-scoring singles from Brendan O'Neill and Trey Bourque.
  • O'Neill reached base four times on a 2-for-3 day with two walks.
  • Melillo, who played the first eight innings in center field, made his third appearance on the mound, and struck out two in a perfect ninth inning.
  • The final three Skidmore pitchers (Ethan Barnett, Grayden Harris, Melillo) did not allow an earned run and surrendered just two hits and struck out seven hitters over the final 4.2 innings. Barnett earned the win after finishing the fifth inning and working a clean sixth. Harris continued on the hill and fired two innings of one-hit ball with three punch outs.
  • Zachary Figueras was 3-for-5 for the Gators with two RBI and a run scored. He had Sage's only extra-base hit, a run-scoring double in the fifth.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will close out division play this weekend against Union with a single home game Friday at 4 p.m. and a doubleheader at Union in Amsterdam scheduled for Sunday.
