Thoroughbreds challenge RPI in Liberty League opener

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Rensselaer took two Liberty League softball games from Skidmore Saturday afternoon at Wagner Park. The Engineers won the first 4-0 and the second 6-2. Skidmore is 7-14 and 0-2 Liberty, while RPI is 17-5 and 2-0.
 
GAME 1
  • The Engineers score four unearned runs on seven hits, while starter Alexis Cooke (W, 6-2) and reliever Brooke Stroczinski (SV, 4) limited the Thoroughbreds to five hits and three walks, while striking out eight.
  • Carolina Garcia was 2-3 for Skidmore.
  • Starter Lindsey Raimondi (5-6) took the loss. She allowed three runs (all unearned) on four hits with one strikeout and three walks. Madi Gambino tossed three innings of effective relief, allowing one unearned run on three hits.
  • The Thoroughbreds stranded seven runners.
 
GAME 2
  • RPI went up 3-0, before Skidmore got on the board in the fourth when Claire Stone worked a 10-pitch at bat into a bases loaded walk. Down in the count 1-2, she fouled off three straight pitches, took two balls, fouled another off and then walked.
  • The teams exchanged runs in the fifth. Franny Casillas had an RBI double for the Skidmore run.
  • Casillas finished 2-4. Meghan Robertson was 3-4 with a double and run.
  • Raimondi (5-7) was tagged with the loss. She allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits, three walks and a pair of strikeouts. Robertson finished the game, giving up three runs (two earned) no eight hits, one walk and three strikeouts.
  • Erike Holowka (6-2) got the win for RPI, while Sroczinski earned her fifth save of the season with three innings of relief.
  • NEXT UP: The Thoroughbreds are home again Sunday with a Liberty League pair against St. Lawrence, starting at 1 p.m.
