MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Skidmore College completed its spring break trip with a pair of losses on Thursday. Skidmore's scheduled game versus Keystone College was canceled, and a game versus Curry College was added. Skidmore fell to Curry, 5-4, before dropping the finale to Mississippi University for Women, 15-5.
The Thoroughbreds finish the trip 1-6.
GAME 1 – Curry 5, Skidmore 4
- After Skidmore grabbed the lead in the top of the second inning on an overthrow, Curry scored twice in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.
- Skidmore tied it at two in the top half of the fourth on a similar infield throwing error.
- Curry fended off the Skidmore comeback bid, which featured a Franny Casillas two-run inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning.
- Skidmore stranded the potential tying run at third base in the top of the seventh inning on a ground out back to Curry's pitcher, Caitlyn Wood.
- Casillas was at the bat when all four of Skidmore's runs were scored. She reached on both errors and hit the most exciting play in sports: the inside-the-park homer.
- Chloe McGonagle had three hits in four trips, all singles.
- Grace O'Connell was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
- Lindsey Raimondi struck out five batters and did not walk any in the circle for the Thoroughbreds.
GAME 2 – MUW 15, Skidmore 5 (5 inn.)
- It was a one-run game, 5-4, until MUW exploded for 10 runs on four hits with six walks in the top of the fifth inning.
- Skidmore got a run in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough to extend the game any further.
- Melissa Mathias and Claire Stone hit doubles for the Thoroughbreds.
- MUW plated four runs in the top of the fourth inning.
- Skidmore answered with one on a Meghan Robertson single in the third and after MUW added a single run in the fourth, the Thoroughbreds made it a one-run game with a three-spot in the fourth. Casillas, Madison Bonham, and Madi Gambino drove in the runs in the inning.
- MUW pitching allowed just one batter to reach base on a free pass. Skidmore walked nine batters.
NEXT UP: Skidmore is scheduled to return to play on Saturday, March 25 at home against Castleton University.
