Thoroughbred hurlers pitch two-hitter in 11-0 win over Defiance

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Matt Karpousis, Aaron Kats, and Ewen Donald teamed up to throw a two-hit shutout on Thursday morning in an 11-0 seven-inning win for the Skidmore College baseball team over Defiance College. Skidmore is 6-0 on the trip with four shutouts. The Thoroughbreds are 7-2 overall. Defiance falls to 1-7.

  • Jaden Torrado went 3-for-3 with two RBI doubles and a run scored.
  • Trey Bourque also had three hits. He was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs.
  • Max Mello drove in a pair of runs and finished 2-for-4 with and crossed the plate twice.
  • Karpousis started and earned the victory in the predetermined pitching situation for Skidmore. He did not allow a hit over three innings and worked around three walks and a hit batter. He wiggled out of a jam in the bottom of the third thanks in part to a pickoff at second base.
  • Aaron Kats pitched three scoreless innings of relief. He allowed just one hit on a well-executed hit-and-run play through the vacated spot at second base. Kats struck out three and walked three.
  • Ewen Donald closed it out with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh.
  • For the fifth game in a row, Skidmore scored in the first inning. The Thoroughbreds got a pair in the top of the first when Jackson Hornung walked before three straight singles to Bourque, Mello, and Brendan O'Neill.
  • The Thoroughreds matched it in the second inning. Sam Kornet walked to lead off leading to two more consecutive doubles from Torrado and Anthony Mollica.
  • Skidmore made it 7-0 in the third with three unearned runs and Torrado's second RBI double in as many innings.
  • The Thoroughbreds added another in the fourth on a Mello single through the right side.
  • Bourque singled in a run in the sixth and O'Neill picked up another RBI two batters later on a sacrifice fly.
  • Skidmore completed the scoring in the seventh on s Zach Dines pinch hit single.
  • Defiance picked up its second and final base hit, a single through the middle, with two outs in the seventh.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore is scheduled to play University of Wisconsin-Stout in a single nine-inning game on Friday at 12 p.m.
