Thoroughbreds fall to powerhouse Hillsborough

TAMPA, Fla. – The Skidmore College women's tennis team dropped a competitive match against NJCAA powerhouse Hillsborough Community College on Tuesday.

  • Skidmore dropped two singles matches in third-set tiebreakers and two out of the three doubles matches by an 8-6 margin.
  • Katherine Almquist won her first set at third singles before losing in the winner-take-all tiebreaker, 7-3.
  • Maya Lal also fell in a tight match at first singles (6-4, 4-6, 7-7[7-2]).
  • Lal/Chanhtel Thongphok at #2 doubles and Beilynn Geiss/Konika Dhull at #3 doubles took the host squads to the wire in doubles play.
  • Coach Curt Speerschneider: "Obviously we wish we could have pulled some of the close ones out.  The final score definitely did not reflect how close this match really was.  Doubles was down to the wire with two extremely close matches and all three very high level.  Singles came down to some tie breakers to make a difference.  Hats off to HCC for just playing those big points a bit tougher. We pushed them for four hours, but they didn't budge.  That's why they're the #1 ranked NJCAA team in the country.  The level of this match will hopefully pay off with some big matches for us the next few weekends, including in Virginia this weekend."
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will finish spring break play in Virginia at University of Mary Washington for matches against host UMW Friday and Washington and Lee University on Saturday.
