Thoroughbreds go to the wire with Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y.— The Skidmore College women's basketball team gave Ithaca College a run for its money in a 52-49 Liberty League road loss. The match-up between the league's top two teams all the makings of playoff basketball. The Thoroughbreds are 16-5 overall and 12-2 in league play, while the 20th ranked Bombers are 18-2 and 13-0.
  • Andi Levitz scored 10 points off the bench for Skidmore. Julia Blanck hit for nine points to go along with 12 rebounds and five blocks. Becca Horger added eight points and four rebounds.
  • Lindsey Albertelli paced Ithaca with 21 points.
  • The game featured eight lead changes and 12 ties.
  • Ithaca had the slight early advantage, turning a 12-8 first quarter lead into a 20-13 lead with 7:10 to play in the second. Skidmore fought back with a 10-3 run to close the half and tie the game 23-23. Melissa Severino had two threes in the final 2:12 to key the run. Levitz and Amelia Medolla had the other four points.
  • The Thoroughbreds worked out a 35-31 lead after three.
  • The fourth quarter went back and forth, staying a one possession game, until Ithaca used an old fashion three-point play to go up 49-43 with 1:38 to play. Skidmore didn't quit, with Horger getting it back to three, 49-46, with a three-point play of her own with 1:25 left. The score stayed that way until a Bomber field goal with :04 to play made it 51-46. Levitz drilled a three with :01 left, but a made Ithaca free throw left it 52-49.
  • COACH JESSICA TURNER: "I am so proud of this group and the way they battled with a very talented Ithaca team. Today marked the last of five straight Liberty League road games for us and the fact that we came out focused and ready to play speaks to how resilient these young ladies are. We will keep working to get better each day and controlling what we can control - our effort, energy and focus."
  • With four games to play (all home), the Thoroughbreds are in second place, 1 ½ games behind Ithaca. Vassar has moved into third, one game behind Skidmore.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will host Bard on Feb. 10 at 5:30 p.m. before a big match-up with Vassar on Feb. 11 at 2 p.m.
