Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Thoroughbreds fall to DI Lafayette, 6-3, with plethora of tight matches

WILTON, N.Y. – One doubles match, and four out of the six singles matches were decided by extra-set tiebreakers between the Skidmore College women's tennis team and Division I Lafayette, but the Thoroughbreds came up short in the competitive battle, 6-3.

  • Beilynn Geiss and Konika Dhull were double winners for Skidmore (1-1) in its spring opener. The duo defeated DeNardo/Campbell at third doubles, 8-2, before both winning their respective singles bouts. At fifth singles, Dhull claimed victory (6-3, 4-6, 10-6) in an extra session. Geiss won convincingly at sixth singles (6-0, 6-1).
  • Maya Lal and Chanhtel Thongphok fell short at second doubles against Boeckman/Sparhawk of Lafayette (2-3) in a tiebreak, 8-7 (7-5).
  • Grace Truong, Katherine Almquist, and Ella Provost all won their first sets before their opponents came back to win in three. Almquist had the closest match of the bunch. She dropped a second-set tiebreak and fell just short in the deciding game, 10-8.
  • Coach Curt Speerschneider: "A lot of tight games, sets, and matches in this one.  We lost a lot of the little battles today, which got us in the end.  We need to be better when we have leads or closing out sets and pulling out tough tie breakers.  It's our first match back, so all things we'll get better at as we get more matches".
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will host Wellesley College next Saturday, Feb. 25 before jumping back into league play against Bard on Sunday, Feb. 26.
