Kupstas goes for 33; Skidmore completes season sweep of Vassar, 79-57

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior Tautvydas Kupstas scored a career high 33 points to propel the Skidmore College men's basketball team to a decisive 79-57 win over Vassar on Saturday. The weekend sweep jolts the Thoroughbreds up to 12-11 and 10-6 in the Liberty League. Vassar drops to 13-10 and 9-7.

  • The victory clinches a spot in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament for the Thoroughbreds. With two games left in the regular season, Skidmore is in a three-way tie for third place with RPI and Hobart.
  • Kupstas' big night was comprised of a 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) mark from 3-point range. He was 13-of-23 (56.5 percent) overall from the field. Kupstas added five rebounds and one assist.
  • Riley Greene, one day after his dramatic game winning buzzer beater, matched his season-high mark with 12 assists. He also scored eight points with six rebounds.
  • Greg Skoric added on 15 points as he finished 7-of-8 from the line with five boards.
Skoric 1,000 Before the game, Skidmore recognized Greg Skoric, who joined the 1,000-point club on Friday.
  • Jack Rovillard poured in eight points on an unblemished 3-for-3 shooting afternoon off the bench.
  • Jack Rothenberg and Zev Katz led the way for Vassar with 14 points apiece.
  • Skidmore came out firing and went on an 11 unanswered point run to build up the early lead. The tide swung heavily back towards Vassar and the Brewers were ahead by nine after an Ethan Ellis bomb with 2:24 left in the half. Skidmore answered with a strong 12-3 push to end the half with the score tied up at 36.
  • The Thoroughbreds dominated the second 20 minutes, shooting 58.6 percent (17-of-29) as a team to outpace the visitors 46-24 in the period.
  • A Case Parsons 3-pointer with 11:18 remaining got the Brewers back to even at 46. Kupstas then took control. He scored on Skidmore's next two trips down the court, which included a three-point play. Then, Skoric electrified the crowd with an emphatic dunk to give Skidmore its first double-digit lead since the early part of the opening half.
  • The big advantage stuck, swelling to over 20 on three separate occasions, as the Thoroughbreds were able to run out the clock.
  • Coach Joe Burke: "I thought our guys played hard all night and executed really well in the second half.  We have some momentum right now which is so important this time of the year. We need to have a good week of practice and a good home weekend to close out the regular season. Our mindset is to continue to focus on one game at a time and see where the chips fall after Saturday night.
  •  "Thank you to all of our fans and our incredible Alumni who came back for the day. The atmosphere in the building was outstanding both nights and our players clearly fed off it. The culture of our program is our backbone."
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will host second-place St Lawrence (just one game ahead of Skidmore and company) on Friday, Feb. 17 before rounding out the regular season on Feb. 18 against Clarkson with Senior Day and the Big Green Scream.
