#7 Geneseo snaps #10 Skidmore’s historic unbeaten start

GENESEO, N.Y. – The quest for the Skidmore College men's hockey team to finish the first half unbeaten was squashed on the road at SUNY Geneseo on Friday evening. The seventh-ranked Knights defeated the 10th-ranked Thoroughbreds 5-2.
  • Skidmore did not suffer a defeat over its first 11 games, setting a new program mark to begin a season. The Thoroughbreds close the first half at 9-1-2 and will come back in January in first place of the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC).
  • Geneseo is 12-2 with five straight wins.
  • Skidmore was one of the last two unbeaten teams in Division III. St. Scholastica (9-0) is the only one remaining.
  • The Thoroughbreds defeated the then second-ranked Knights, 4-3, in November of last year.
  • Danny Magnuson and Nick Cozzi were the goal scorers for Skidmore.
  • Will Dow-Kenny, Ryan Waltman, and Owen Gonter each collected assists.
  • Geneseo used a goal and an assist each from Cooper Fensterstock, Luke Panchisin, and Peter Morgan.
  • Skidmore scored first, late in the first period, to break the ice. D-partners Magnuson and Dow-Kenny hooked up for the tally.
  • Geneseo grabbed the lead with two goals in the middle period and another just past the midway point of the third to lead 3-1.
  • Cozzi scored on the power play at 12:20 to cut the Skidmore deficit to one, and the hosts scored two late goals for the 5-2 final.
  • Shots were 45-34 Geneseo. Tate Brandon made 40 saves for Skidmore. Jacob Torgner turned aside 32 shots for Geneseo.
  • Both teams connected once with the man advantage. Skidmore was 1-for-3, Geneseo was 1-for-2.
NEXT UP: Skidmore will return from break Jan. 5-6 to host #1 Hobart and #6 Elmira in crucial NEHC matchups.
