Thoroughbreds toss everything at Vassar in Liberty League First Round

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – In a match where neither team led by more than five points, the Skidmore College women's volleyball team lost to Vassar College in four sets (23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 27-25) in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament on Tuesday evening.

  • Skidmore finishes the year with a 12-14 record after making its first playoff appearance since 2017.
  • The victorious and fifth-seeded Brewers are 17-9 and advance to the final four this weekend in Ithaca.
  • Jo Blanco capped her Skidmore career with a 10-kill effort with seven digs, two blocks, and two aces to lead the Thoroughbreds.
  • Fellow senior Ella Harris registered eight kills with five digs and two blocks, and classmate Noa Berger wrapped her Thoroughbred tenure with a double-double on 16 assists and 13 digs.
  • Jazlin Chen finished with six kills to go along with three blocks, one solo, and a pair of digs.
  • Vassar scored six out of the match's first seven points, but Skidmore pulled even at eight with a quick 7-2 run. Vassar held the first-set lead until back-to-back kills from Chen and Stolarz tied it again at 13.
  • Skidmore led for the first time at 15-14 and briefly led by four prior to four unanswered Brewer points gave the hosts a 19-18 lead. The Thoroughbreds closed in on the set win by scoring four out of five and got it done on their third set point thanks to a Vassar hitting error.
  • After another tight opening to the second frame, the hosts were able to square the match at one thanks in large part to a 5-0 spurt out of a 17-16 deficit to take a late four-point lead. It ended up being too much for Skidmore to come back from, despite closing the gap to two.
  • The story continued in game three. A back and forth beginning gave way to a 6-2 Vassar mid-set run for 15-11 lead. Skidmore later used four consecutive points to tie it up at 19.
  • Vassar barged ahead, 23-21, when a Chen kill followed directly by a Manning aced evened the score at 23. Vassar reached set point on a service error and put it away one point later.
  • In the fourth and deciding set, Skidmore had the lead late, 22-19, when Vassar ripped off four in a row to grab hold of the lead. Skidmore got the next one to even it back up and went on to face three match points in a row before a Maura McAusland kill finally clinched it.
  • McAusland and Holland Kaplan carried the load for Vassar with 15 kills apiece.
