Thoroughbreds run over Bears, 73-53

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The Skidmore College men's basketball team led from start to finish in a 73-53 non-league road win over SUNY Potsdam Tuesday night. The Thoroughbreds are 1-1, while the Bears drop to 0-3.
  • Starting four freshmen, the Thoroughbreds were led by rookie Charlie Fantom with 17 points, including five three-pointers. Sophomore Joey Skoric had a double/double with 13 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. Freshman Jack LaGarde had a double/double of his own with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Fantom put Skidmore in front with a deep three 28 seconds into the game. The team never trailed after that. The Thoroughbreds outscored the home team 15-6 over the final 4:10 of the first half to take a 41-30 lead into the break.
  • Skoric, LaGarde, and Hakeem Daphnis scored a string of field goals to open up a 47-30 lead to start the second half.
  • The Bears got to within five with a 12-0 run, 47-42, but the Thoroughbreds settled down and outscored Potsdam 14-4 to pull away with a 61-46 lead with 7:28 to play. Skidmore led by as many as 21 before the 73-53 final.
  • Fantom was 5-8 from three-point range. He accounted for half of his team's 10 threes.
  • The Thoroughbred controlled the boards with a 51-38 rebound advantage, including 18 offensive rebounds (LaGarde-8, Skoric-4).
  • The Bears only hit one of 11 three attempts and shot a dismal 14-24 from the free throw line.
  • Coach Joe Burke: "We are constantly talking about just trying to get better every day. I can't imagine there's too many teams in the country as young as us so it's gonna be a heck of a ride with this group.  We are going to have great nights and some tough nights but as long as we are learning together and playing hard we are going to be a tough out come February. Tonight, we put together some really good runs on both ends of the floor playing the way we want to play."
  • UP NEXT: Skidmore heads to Boston to face Wesleyan University on Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. in the first round of the Emmanuel College Tip-Off Tournament.
