2023-24 MBB Season Preview

New-look Thoroughbreds ready to take the court for 2023-24

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's basketball team has an all new look ahead of the 2023-24 season. The Thoroughbreds added eight new members to their roster, all first-years, as they ready to compete in the upcoming season.

Skidmore opens the season on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. against SUNY New Paltz in a fundraiser event organized by Skidmore Athletics to benefit the Burke family.

The Schedule: After the opener, Skidmore will play its next three games on the road, including the Emmanuel College Tip-Off Classic Nov. 17-18 before coming back to host Hartwick on Monday, Nov. 20. The home stand continues as Liberty League play opens Dec. 1-2 against Clarkson and St. Lawrence at the Williamson Sports Center. The Thoroughbreds return home after the New Year and pick right up with a local rivalry weekend against RPI and Union Jan. 5-6. Skidmore will then host Vassar on Jan. 9 leading into a six-game road swing before closing the home slate Feb. 2-3 against Ithaca and Bard and Feb. 9-10 against Hobart and RIT. Skidmore's annual Big Green Scream is slated for Friday, Feb. 9.

Last Season: Skidmore finished the regular season at 11-7 in the Liberty League to tie RPI for fourth place. With the Engineers holding the tiebreak, Skidmore traveled to Troy for the First Round of the Liberty League Tournament and lost 72-54. Overall, the Thoroughbreds finished with a record of 13-13 while finishing the regular season victorious in four out of the final five games.

Liberty League Tournament: After 18 games, two against each opponent, in the Liberty League, the top-six teams will qualify for the postseason tournament. The opening round of games will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 20 followed by the semifinals (Feb. 23) and the championship game on Sunday, Feb. 25

Back: Skidmore brings back seven returners from the 2022-23 squad. Of them, Alexei Downie was the leading scorer with 5.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game a year ago while averaging 21.5 minutes on the hardwood.

Incoming: The substantial first-year class features eight players ready to make their collegiate debut this season.
