Thoroughbreds score late, pick up league point with 1-1 tie against Union

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Hannah Fetzer scored the first goal of her career in the 85th minute to help the Skidmore College women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie with visiting Union College on Wednesday evening.

  • Fetzer had an open net for the equalizer after Izzy Sullivan chased down an Ashley Downes insert immediately off a Thoroughbred throw in. Sullivan beat her mark and the goalkeeper to the ball before dishing it to Fetzer streaking through.
  • Both Sullivan and Downes got assists.
  • Union went up with a Vanessa Jorgensen tally in the 9th minute. She received a leading pass from Taylor Bovardi and was able to make a quick move to beat Skidmore keeper Claire Wolgast.
  • Both Wolgast and Union goalie, Rachel Berliner, were otherwise unscathed.
  • Wolgast finished with three saves. Berliner had seven.
  • After a slight 6-5 edge in shots in the first half, the Thoroughbreds outpaced the Garnet Chargers 12-2 over the final 45 to finish with an 18-7 edge in shots. Shots on goal were 8-4.
  • Before Skidmore ultimately scored the tying goal, Downes' header off a Skidmore corner in the 66th minute clunked off the crossbar and out.
  • Skidmore, with its sixth tie of the year, is 5-4-6 overall and 0-4-4 in the Liberty League with one game to go. Union is 6-7-2 and 2-4-2 with a playoff spot on the line ahead of its final contest.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will complete the season on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wachenheim Field against Bard.
