Thoroughbreds complete strong opening weekend with Potsdam sweep

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College swimming & diving teams combined to win 31 out of 32 events on Saturday in a sweep of visiting SUNY Potsdam on Saturday afternoon. The men grabbed a 228-51 win, while the women were victorious, 240-54.
 
  • The men have won five in a row against the Bears and eight out of the last nine.
  • The women are unbeaten over their last 12 duals with Potsdam, with 11 wins and a tie. The Thoroughbred women have won the past eight meetings.
  • For the second day in a row, the 200-yard medley relay teams set the tone with a pair of victories. The women's top squad, consisting of Ella Palmet, Elissa Miller, Kelly Hsu, and Gretchen Gwitt finished in 1:57.54, while the men's team of Brandon Lis, Brendan Lu, Ryan Delfico, and Jonah Vaynshtok finished in 1:41.81.
  • In addition to the 200-yard medley relay win, Hsu won a pair of individual events: 200-yard butterfly (2:21.22), 100-yard butterfly (1:02.28).
  • Lu was also a two-time individual winner. He earned honors in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.88) and the 100-yard freestyle (48.59).
  • Miller and Gwitt each won an individual event. Miller grabbed first in the 200-yard IM (2:25.63), while Gwitt was first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.42 seconds.
  • In the men's 50-yard freestyle, Gavin Schiavi won with a time of 23.23 seconds.
  • In the men's 200-yard IM, Delfico clocked in at 2:02.06 to earn the victory.
  • Palmet put a bookend on the meet with relay wins. She joined Jae Mason, Emily Booth, and Caroline Rogers for first in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:50.12.
  • Nicolas Sodi, Lis, Liam Keating, and Vaynshtok also won the 200-yard freestyle relay with an aggregate time of 1:33.23.
  • Elsewhere, Rogers picked up a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing in 11:46.95. Sodi won the men's side after finishing in 10:30.79.
  • Sodi finished the meet with three individual wins. He was also first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.22) and the 100-yard butterfly (55.25).
  • The women's 200-yard backstroke went to Kylie Donaldson with a winning time of 2:24.37.
  • Lis, in addition to two relay wins, was first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.22).
  • In the 200-yard breaststroke, Keating won the men's race (2:18.49) and Holly Staats pulled away in the women's heat (2:44.41).
  • The 200-yard freestyle was won by Chloe Kim (2:06.18) and Aidan Darling (1:53.89). Kim was also the winner in the 100-yard freestyle in 59.07 seconds.
  • Skidmore also swept the 100-yard backstroke with wins by Sarah Miller (1:06.23) and Keegan Scharoun (56.60).
  • Wins in the 100-yard breaststroke went to Katherine Manaresi (1:15.45) and Devin Herbinger (1:06.59).
  • Tomás Ruiz finished his unbeaten weekend with wins in both diving competitions. He scored a 206.25 in the 3-meter and a 207.45 in the 1-meter.
  • In the women's diving competition, Sophia May won the 1-meter with a 216.68 and Kailey Murphy came out ahead in the 3-meter with a score of 216.68.

NEXT UP: Skidmore will travel to Clarkson next Saturday, Oct. 28 for a dual with the Golden Knights.
