Thoroughbreds handle Herons, clinch playoff berth

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Skidmore College women's basketball team took care of business Tuesday evening with a 66-52 Liberty League road win over William Smith College. The win clinches a playoff spot for the Thoroughbreds with six league games to play. Skidmore is 15-4 overall and 11-1 in league play. The Herons are 6-13 and 4-8.
  • The Thoroughbreds are ½ game out of first place behind 11-0 Ithaca and a full two games up on third place Vassar and four games ahead of fourth place St. Lawrence. Six teams make the tournament with the top two finishers earning a bye into the semifinals.
  • Sarah Chambers led three Skidmore players in double figures. She scored 12 points and had three blocks and six rebounds. Becca Horger added 11 points, five assists, three steals and a block. Cassie Davidson scored 10 points.
  • Maddie Patrick paced William Smith with 17 points. Lauren DeVaney had 14 points and 12 rebounds.
  • After a one-point first quarter, the Thoroughbreds took control in the second quarter, using a 14-0 run to open a 30-20 lead at the half. Amelia Medolla started the steak with a three-pointer. Four more players accounted for the other 11 points, showing off the team's balanced scoring.
  • Medolla opened the third quarter with another three and put the game away early with a 24-11 advantage for a 54-31 lead after three quarters.
  • Skidmore's bench outscored William Smith 21-4.
  • The Thoroughbreds have beaten the Herons five straight times and swept the season series for the sixth time since 2009.
  • NEXT UP: The Thoroughbreds travel to Rensselaer on Friday for a 5:30 p.m. game. Followed by a showdown at first place Ithaca College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
