Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Skidmore succumbs to RPI, 70-57

  • The Skidmore College men's basketball team fell to visiting Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon, 70-57.
  • Skidmore completes the weekend with a split after the dramatic victory over Ithaca on Friday night. The thoroughbreds slip to 8-9 and 6-4 in the Liberty League. RPI improves to 13-4 and 7-3.
  • Three Thoroughbreds scored in double figures. Tautvydas Kupstas led the way with 16 points.
  • Greg Skoric had 13 points and fell one rebound short of finishing the weekend with double-doubles in both games. He pulled down nine boards.
  • Riley Greene had 10 points and six assists.
  • Avery Eugster dropped 22 points on 5-of-12 long-range shooting with six assists and five rebounds for RPI.
  • Jonny Angbazo had 17 points and nine rebounds for the visitors.
  • After Skidmore drained both of its first two shots, RPI took control with a 13-point unanswered burst.
  • The Thoroughbreds inched closer throughout the first half, and a Kupstas triple brought Skidmore back to within two with 2:36 left. That before RPI finished the half on a 9-1 run.
  • The Engineers had their largest lead of the afternoon at 15 on a Eugster 3-pointer with 1:27 remaining in the second half.
  • Skoric was 2-for-3 at the line over the final 65 seconds to close out the scoring.
  • Coach Joe Burke: "I thought RPI outplayed us today so give credit to them. They made all the hustle plays and won the 50/50 balls. Our starters looked a step slow and our bench didn't give us the jolt we needed.  We have to get back to work and continue to improve.  We have some great wins and some bad losses, so we continue to search for consistency. We have not put a complete weekend together in a while."
  • NEXT UP: With eight games remaining, Skidmore will play each of its next four contests away from home. The Thoroughbreds will be at RIT and Union Jan. 27-28.
