Skidmore strong in 4-0 victory in opener

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Junior Kyra Russman-Araya scored twice and assisted on the other two goals for the Skidmore College women's soccer team in a 4-0 win over visiting Castleton to open the 2022 season on Saturday.

  • Junior Izzy Sullivan and first-year Molly Cunningham scored the other Skidmore goals, both in the first half.
  • Cunningham connected on the first shot of her career just under two minutes into the contest to open the scoring. She took a bouncing cross from Russman-Araya and converted the one-touch left boot.
  • Then, Russman-Araya doubled the Thoroughbred lead at the 16:40 mark when Maddy Glick took control of a bouncing ball off a Skidmore corner and dished it back for the open shot.
  • Russman-Araya sent Sullivan a long pass for a breakaway making it 3-0.
  • Early in the second half, Russman-Araya capped the scoring on a direct kick from just outside the box that hit the crossbar and fell behind the end line.
  • Skidmore led in shots, 21-8, and in shots on goal, 11-1.
  • In shared duty, Claire Wolgast and Lauren Morrissey combined in goal for the shutout. Wolgast made one save.
  • Castleton keeper Alex Benfatti finished with seven saves.
