Hughes leads Thoroughbreds to 9-0 opening win

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Senior Carrie Hughes scored a career-high three goals and added an assist to lead the Skidmore College field hockey team to a 9-0 win over Thomas College Saturday afternoon at Wagner Park. It was the season opener for the 1-0 Thoroughbreds, while Thomas is 1-1.
 
  • The nine goals were the most for the Thoroughbreds since a 10-0 win in 2016 against Castleton University.
  • Seven different Skidmore players scored, including six starters. Arianna Spiezio started the scoring at 6:34 of the first quarter. The Thoroughbreds scored four times in the second quarter to lead 5-0 at the break. Hughes made it 2-0 at 19:13 and 4-0 at 28:28. She picked-up her third goal in the fourth quarter at 49:55.
  • CC Wetter scored two goals, while Arianna Spiezio, Carly Shea, Kayla Hassett, and Morgan Sickels, all scored.
  • The Thoroughbreds held Thomas to two shots (one on goal), outshooting the Panthers 25-2.
  • Victoria Bodnar played the first 54:40 to earn the win. She cleared away a Thomas semi breakaway early in the fourth quarter to preserve the shutout. Juliana Yglesias had one save over the final 5:20.
  • Skidmore is 5-0 all-time vs. Thomas.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore hosts St. Joseph's College of Maine at 11 a.m. Sunday.
