Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Clash between Skidmore and #5 William Smith ends in 1-1 draw

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -  The Skidmore College women's soccer team responded from an early goal against and scored to tie it just 10 seconds later before holding tight to earn a league point in a 1-1 draw against nationally fifth-ranked William Smith College on Saturday.

  • The stalemate puts to end a 12-game winning streak in the head-to-head series for the Herons dating back to a string of four consecutive ties from 2008-10.
  • Junior Claire Wolgast stood tall for the Thoroughbreds. She soared past Wednesday's career-high nine saves with 14 stops against William Smith. She finished the week with 23 saves and just one goal allowed.
  • Classmate Kyra Russman-Araya extended her team lead with her fifth goal on a penalty kick in the seventh minute. On the immediate rush after the visitors took the lead, Isabella Nevin held possession in the WSC penalty area and was taken down by a defender to create the PK opportunity.
  • Emma Faso gave the Herons the lead at the 6:42 mark. Shayna Straney sent a low cross that stayed inside the post for the foot of the streaking Faso for the tap in.
  • Russman-Araya sent Kat Dunn on a chase to a through ball early in the second half, but Dunn was unable to control a sprinting touch right at the edge of the box.
  • Russman-Araya also had a chance of her own later in the second half on a free kick from 28 yards out, but her strike curled just wide.
  • William Smith held a healthy advantage in possession and finished with a 20-6 edge in shots. Shots on goal were 15-3.
  • The Herons were awarded nine corner kicks including a dangerous insert with just about a minute remaining.
  • Skidmore had one corner kick in the 88th minute.
  • NEXT UP: Unbeaten in five straight, the Thoroughbreds will host Rensselaer next Saturday, Oct. 1 at 3 p.m.
