Thoroughbreds open with 3-2,16-7 sweep of USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y.—The Skidmore College baseball team opened the 2022 season with a 3-2, 16-7 road sweep of USM. The two wins move coach Ron Plourde to 398 for his career with a pair of games at Old Westbury on Sunday.

GAME 1

  • Jack Clark picked-up the opening win, going seven strong innings. He allowed one unearned run on four hits. He struck out eight and walked two.
  • After taking a 1-1 tie into extra innings, the teams found some offense. In the eighth, William Snyder drilled a 2-2 pitch to right field for an RBI single to make it 2-1. With two outs, Trey Bourque took four straight pitches with the bases loaded for a 3-1 lead.
  • Ethan Caizza came on in relief of Clark in the eighth, earning the save.
  • Merchant Marine ran itself out of the eighth inning. Garrett Alchele tried to stretch a two-out RBI double into a triple, but the Thoroughbreds came through defensively when left fielder Max Mello hit cutoff Snyder who nailed Alchele with a perfect through to Brendan O'Neill at third.
  • Jackson Hornung and Bourque had two hits each. Danny Melillo had a triple.

GAME 2

  • Skidmore plated 10 runs on just three hits in the 5th to blow the game open. The Thoroughbreds drew eight walks in the inning.
  • The team turned the second triple play in its history and the first since 2004 when pitcher Peter Martin snagged a line drive and went to Bourque at third who fired it to Pascal Marcktell at second.
  • Ethan Barnett got the win in relief. He allowed one run on three hits over 3.1 innings with no walks and two strikeouts.
  • Sean Lang was 2-2 with four runs and an RBI. Anthony Petersen was 1-1 with two RBI an four walks.

COACH PLOURDE:
"Given our first time outside on a field, we were pleased with our play and effort.   We turned a triple play for the first time since 2004, which was a big turning point in the game."
